Archetypal images in dreams of the Korean(1)

Abstract
As the first step of the serial investigations on the archetypal dreams of the Korean, the author reviewed 21 dreams in Samguk Sagi and Samguk Yusa, the books on the history of Three Kingdoms Period (B.C. 41-A.D. 662), in order to elucidate the characteristics of the dream contents, the ways of interpretations, and people¢¥s attitude toward the dream at that time.
The most dream revealed the highly important symbolical images such as: stars, a child in golden robe, tiger and leopard, a man with horn in head, a tree with the nest of Bong, a mythical bird; the old man, heavenly god, the spirit of the dead, a blue gem, the saint, the unknown monk and 12 Kuan-in, which can be regarded as archetypal images in terms of analytical psychology. The mythical personified images in dreams frequently gave the dreamers the important orders and informations. The orders ere followed by the dreamers without hesitation and it produced good result.
"Birth dreams" were common and the contents revealed the typical patterns such as falling stars onto the dreamer, swallowing blue gem, a man recently deceised enters the house etc.
It seems that the people of Three Kingdoms extremely appreciated the prophetic and prospective function of dream and believed in the magical power of dream. Thus, buying the good dream with good consequence was told. Synchronicity phenomena according to Jung as meaningful coincidence between the inner psychic events and the outer physical occurrences are abundantly reported in connection with dreams. Some dreams were quite
instructive which led the dreamers to self awareness and insight in the truth of life.
The way of the interpretation was simple and concrete, applying culturally determined symbol system, though the dream was regarded as allegorical expression of something meaningful facts. The possibility of multiple meanings of the dream was suggested. Some-times, one¢¥s clinging to the interpretation of the omen represented in dream was criticized, iecommending either one¢¥s humility toward the incomprehensible meaning of the heavenly message or the right deed in the reality.
